Bobinsana: common name and species

Behind the common name bobinsana stands Calliandra angustifolia Spruce ex Benth., a species of the legume family (Fabaceae) that the Catálogo de Plantas y Líquenes de Colombia classes as a shrub or tree. The author citation means that the name was proposed by Richard Spruce and validly published by George Bentham, in 1875. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP), compiled at Kew, lists several older names as synonyms, among them Calliandra subnervosa Benth. and Feuilleea angustifolia (Spruce ex Benth.) Kuntze. Other local names exist as well: a national list of useful plants from Ecuador gives chipero, sisiño and yutsu, among others. Like everything Mycotrop sells, the bobinsana products are collectible botanical items and are not for consumption.

The two products in this category

Both products come from the same species and carry the same declared origin, so the choice is about plant part and form. The bark is ground to a fine, light brown powder; the leaves are small, flat and left whole. Each pack shows a label with the plant name, Calliandra angustifolia, the form and a round "Made in Peru" badge. The sizes also differ: the bark powder starts at 25 g with a 100 g step, the leaves start at 50 g with a 250 g step, and both go up to 1 kg.

Product	Plant part and form	Declared origin	Pack sizes
Bobinsana bark powder from Peru	Bark, powdered	Peru	25 g, 100 g, 1 kg
Whole bobinsana leaves from Peru	Leaves, whole	Peru	50 g, 250 g, 1 kg

Origin and natural range

Five areas are recorded in the WCVP as native for Calliandra angustifolia: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and the north of Brazil. The checklist sums them up as a range from Colombia’s south-east to Bolivia’s north-east and northern Brazil. The declared origin of both products, Peru, therefore lies within the wild range of the species. The pack labels do not name a region within Peru, and this page does not add one.

A third bobinsana listing

Besides the two products above, Mycotrop lists a 10 ml bobinsana tincture. It is filed in the Smartshop and under Extracts, the section that groups tinctures and extracts of many plants, rather than in this category. The single-plant sections of the Smartshop also cover other South American species, such as Chaliponga.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.

Discreet delivery

Orders are packed on working days and leave in plain outer packaging that does not describe the contents. Once your order has shipped, we email you the tracking link when one is available. Estimated delivery times, right of withdrawal and exceptions: Delivery, tracking and returns.
