Sumatra benzoin and its two species
A 2023 study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (Heng et al.) states that Sumatra benzoin comes from two species, Styrax paralleloneurus and Styrax benzoin, found mainly on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. The label on this pouch gives Styrax benzoin.
Styrax benzoin Dryand. is an accepted species of the Styracaceae. According to Plants of the World Online (POWO, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew), it is a tree of wet tropical habitats, native from Bangladesh to western and central Malesia, Sumatra included.
Traditional use
The same authors note that benzoins have long been used in perfumery and as incense.
Form and sizes

Burning safely
