This frankincense, also called olibanum, is a loose resin. The pouch label reads “Frankincense”, Boswellia spp, “Olibanum Incense Resin” and “Made in India”, under the Maya Incense brand. Boswellia spp, Boswellia sacra and India
“Boswellia spp” means that the label names the genus without giving a species. The product title cites Boswellia sacra Flück., a name that does not appear on the pouch.
According to Plants of the World Online (POWO, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew), Boswellia sacra is native to northern and north-eastern Somalia, southern Yemen and south-western Oman, whereas Boswellia serrata Roxb. ex Colebr., the species associated with “Indian frankincense”, is native to the Indian subcontinent. As the label does not settle the question, this page describes the resin as Boswellia spp, with India as the country given.
Traditional use
According to the FAO (XII World Forestry Congress), frankincense was introduced into church ceremonies at the beginning of Christianity, and its hardened resin is burnt today in the Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Ethiopian Orthodox and Coptic Churches. The same source names Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia as by far the largest producing countries.
Appearance and sizes
The photos show a mix of small tears and yellowish and grey grains; their size varies within each pack. The resin is the same in all three sizes: 100 g, 250 g and 1 kg.
Frankincense and olibanum
Frankincense and olibanum are names for the resin of Boswellia; the label reads “Frankincense” and “Olibanum Incense Resin”. Myrrh belongs to the same family: the myrrh from Kenya is labelled Commiphora myrrha. All the shop’s resins are grouped in the Resins category.
Burning safely
