Rapé Accessories

Kuripe and tepi at Mycotrop

The category holds two kinds of rapé applicator, kuripe and tepi, plus three pieces for storage. Most kuripe consist of two bamboo tubes that meet in a V, often inside a modelled middle piece. A few have three tubes, such as the Double Barrel and Crystal Double Barrel – XL models, and two hardwood kuripe have a one-piece wooden body: one crescent-shaped, one flat and V-shaped. The Tete Pawã tepi have a long bamboo body; on the double-barrel versions one end divides into two parallel tubes. Like every item in the shop, these accessories are sold strictly as collectible or souvenir items.

Materials and finishes

The table groups the range by material. Only two models come in a choice of colour: the Araruana Arte leather tepi (white or black) and the Hare Haux kuripe (black or grey).

Makers named by the supplier

According to the supplier, many of the decorated pieces, including most bird and crystal kuripe, the Tete Pawã tepi and the bottles, come from the Tete Pawã arts and crafts studio in the upper Juruá region, in the municipality of Marechal Thaumaturgo in the Brazilian state of Acre. The Ararunart kuripe and the Araruana Arte tepi are attributed to artisans from the state of Maranhão, the circular and mixed hardwood kuripe to an artisan named Rafael, and the Yuxibu and Coral Snake kuripe to artisans in Nova Friburgo, in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Rapé blends and ashes

The blends themselves are listed in the main Rapé category, sorted by people or maker. Bark ashes from Brazil, such as tsunu, murici and cumaru, have their own Ashes subcategory.

Which materials are used?

Mostly bamboo, often with a modelled middle piece, stones, shells, leather or burnt-in patterns. Seven kuripe are made of hardwood; for the Honey Comb and Kenê models the supplier names roxinho (Peltogyne angustiflora, legume family).

One holds 10 ml (dark glass with resin decoration), the other 30 ml. According to the supplier, the volume of the pyrographed bamboo container depends on the piece of bamboo used.

The supplier describes the decorated pieces as handmade, with slight variations from one piece to the next.
