A Tete Pawã kuripe with a disc of jagube vine

The Jagube is one of the decorated bamboo kuripes in the rapé accessories at Mycotrop. According to the supplier, it is made by hand at the Tete Pawã arts and crafts studio, in the upper Juruá region of the municipality of Marechal Thaumaturgo, in the Brazilian state of Acre. The model takes its name from the small disc of caapi vine set into its body: the supplier explains that jagube is a name used in the Brazilian Amazon for Banisteriopsis caapi. There is one version, without a size or colour choice.

The vine disc and the craftwork

Banisteriopsis caapi is the accepted botanical name of the caapi vine, a plant of the Malpighiaceae family. In the product photo, the disc shows the brown and orange cross-section of the vine, framed by modelled leaves and small round bud shapes. One of the bamboo tubes has a darker brown band near the joint. Because each piece is made by hand, the supplier points out slight differences from one kuripe to the next, so the piece you receive may differ a little from the photo.

Other Tete Pawã kuripes

The supplier names the same studio for the Bamboo Kuripe – Double Barrel, which has three bamboo tubes and also carries a slice of caapi vine, and for the Bamboo Kuripe – Crystal, which ends in a quartz point. Most kuripes and tepis are grouped in rapé accessories.
