A Kenê-patterned double tepi from Tete Pawã Arts Studio
This tepi comes from Tete Pawã Arts Studio, a craft studio that the supplier places in the upper Juruá region of the municipality of Marechal Thaumaturgo, in the Brazilian state of Acre. Its bamboo body carries Kenê designs, geometric patterns burnt into the surface by pyrography. Towards one end it divides into two thin bamboo tubes, which gives the piece its double barrel form. Mycotrop lists it with the other rapé accessories.

Kenê patterns and pyrography
The supplier describes Kenê as geometric patterns from the indigenous culture of the Amazon region, here burnt into the bamboo by pyrography. In the product photo, interlocking lines, triangles and stepped bands cover the wide part of the body, and the two thin tubes end in engraved rings. Two modelled collars mark the transitions, with leaf and swirl motifs, small round inlays and, on the upper collar, a blue stone. Each piece is handmade, so the pattern and decoration vary slightly from one tepi to the next.
The studio name and related pieces
According to the supplier, “Tete Pawã” means harpy in a Pano language. The same studio name appears on the Bamboo Tepi – Kenê and on the Bamboo Tepi – Tete Pawã Arts Studio. Another two-tube model in the range is the Bamboo Tepi – Double Barrel.
Tepi and kuripe
A tepi is a long pipe: one person blows the rapé into another person’s nostril. A kuripe is a V-shaped applicator: one end goes to the mouth, the other to the nostril, and you blow yourself. Depending on the people, these pipes are made of bamboo, hollow bone or rolled leaves; wood, ceramic and stone are also common today (Faria 2016).
Care
Empty out any remaining powder after each use and let the applicator dry completely before putting it away.
Good to know
- Keep one applicator per person: studies of shared nasal straws found blood and hepatitis C virus on the tips (Aaron et al. 2008).
