Yopo and cebil: two Anadenanthera species

Yopo is the common name of Anadenanthera peregrina, a tree of the legume family (Fabaceae) that is also recorded as cohoba. Its native range runs from the Caribbean islands through Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana to Bolivia and northern and eastern Brazil. Cebil, also recorded as vilca or huilco, is a common name of the related species Anadenanthera colubrina, native to Bolivia and Brazil. Both are accepted species in the World Checklist of Vascular Plants, compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Important: a plant that contains DMT

Good to know

This species is known to contain DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine) or related tryptamines. Combined with a plant that contains MAOIs, as in ayahuasca, it can cause serious interactions with many medicines and other substances.

Not suitable for anyone with a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, for people with heart disease, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Never with antidepressants or other psychoactive substances.
We do not give any preparation method, extraction method or dosage for this plant.

Moving to a larger pack of the same product changes the weight only, not the material. The whole and the powdered cebil seeds come from the same species, so the choice is between intact seeds and a ground product. Our yopo product, Yopo – Anadenanthera peregrina from Herborist, is listed in the Smartshop in packs of 25 g, 100 g and 1 kg.

Botanical notes

The cebil products are sold under the name Anadenanthera colubrina. Botanical checklists do not all place the name cebil in the same way: the GBIF backbone accepts the variety Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil, while the World Checklist of Vascular Plants lists it under Anadenanthera macrocarpa, a species whose recorded native range includes Peru. The product names give Peru as the origin of the material.

Virola peruviana is not an Anadenanthera. It is a tree of the nutmeg family (Myristicaceae), native to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and northern Brazil. The genus Virola contains many species, so checking the full species name is the surest way to tell bark products apart.

Other legume-family plants in our range include Mimosa hostilis (accepted name Mimosa tenuiflora) and the two species in our Acacia category.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
