Syrian rue is the English common name of Peganum harmala L., a species Linnaeus published in 1753; African rue and harmal are other names on record. Common rue, Ruta graveolens, shares the word rue but is classified in another family, the Rutaceae or citrus family. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP), compiled at Kew, places Peganum in the family Nitrariaceae, while the GBIF backbone still files it under Tetradiclidaceae; both refer to the same plant. This plant contains harmala alkaloids (harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine), which are monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). MAOIs block the breakdown of many substances in the body.

Never with antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics, other MAOIs), lithium, tramadol or stimulants: risk of serotonin syndrome, which can be fatal.
Never with other psychoactive substances (MDMA, amphetamines, cocaine, other psychedelics): the effects can become unpredictable and dangerous.
Foods rich in tyramine (aged cheeses, cured meats, fermented products): risk of a sharp rise in blood pressure.
Not suitable for people with heart disease or high blood pressure, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
