Palo santo at Mycotrop

Palo santo is the trade name for the wood and resin of Bursera graveolens, the botanical name the supplier gives for all nine products in this category. Wood and resin are sold by weight: the pieces differ in size and shape, so each pack is weighed rather than counted, and the photos show the type of material, not the exact piece. The other four products are finished goods: incense sticks, two kinds of handmade incense bars and a floral water. Like every item in the shop, they are sold strictly as collectible or souvenir items.

The tree behind the name

Bursera graveolens (Kunth) Triana & Planch. is an accepted species of the Burseraceae. According to WCVP it is native from Mexico to north-western Venezuela and Peru. Older names that WCVP lists as synonyms are Elaphrium graveolens and Terebinthus graveolens. The same family includes the trees of copal, myrrh and frankincense, which you will find under Resins.

Wood, resin and liquid

The supplier gives wood as the plant part for the sticks, logs and finely cut wood, and tree sap for the resin, which is why the resin looks like small lumps and granules rather than wood. The incense sticks are made by Fenix; the supplier gives Brazil as the country. Both kinds of incense bars from Ecuador come in a kraft box labelled Maya Incense: the label of the lavender bars lists palo santo, Amazonian herbs and lavender, and the label of the second bars reads palo santo, Amazonian herbs, caapi and chacruna. The palo santo floral water is a liquid made with palo santo essential oil and Agua de Florida according to the supplier; it is also listed under Floral Waters.

For these second bars the supplier gives three botanical names: Bursera graveolens, Banisteriopsis caapi and Psychotria viridis. Both kinds of bars are also listed under Smudge Bundles.

Burning safely

Burn incense, resins, smudge sticks and palo santo in a well-ventilated room, on a heat-resistant holder (a dish, sand, or charcoal for resins), away from curtains and anything flammable. Always put out the embers before you leave the room.

Precautions

Never leave anything burning unattended, and keep children and pets at a distance.
Smoke can irritate the airways: air the room, and avoid use if you have asthma or a respiratory illness.
Essential oils and floral waters: never swallow them and keep them away from the eyes; dilute oils before any contact with the skin, and seek advice during pregnancy.
Plant ash is not meant to be inhaled: handle it with care.

Storage

Keep incense, resins and wood dry, in a closed container, away from light and heat, so that they keep their fragrance. Close oils and floral waters tightly after use.

Discreet delivery

Orders are packed on working days and leave in plain outer packaging that does not describe the contents. Once your order has shipped, we email you the tracking link when one is available. Estimated delivery times, right of withdrawal and exceptions: Delivery, tracking and returns.

Frequently asked questions

What is the botanical name of palo santo?

Bursera graveolens, a tree of the Burseraceae native from Mexico to north-western Venezuela and Peru according to WCVP. The supplier gives this name for every palo santo product in this category.

How do the small sticks, large sticks and logs differ?

The small chopped sticks are short split pieces, the large wood sticks are longer split pieces, and the logs are whole pieces of wood, each with its own shape. Small sticks come in 100 g, 250 g or 1 kg, large sticks in 50 g or 1 kg, logs in 250 g, 500 g or 1 kg.

Is palo santo resin the same as palo santo wood?

No. The resin forms from the sap of the tree and comes as lumps and granules in 25 g or 100 g. The wood products are cut from the tree itself.

Why is the wood sold by weight and not by piece?

Because the pieces vary in size and shape. A pack of a given weight can therefore hold a different number of sticks or logs from one order to the next.

Where does the palo santo come from?

The supplier gives Peru for all wood and resin products, Brazil for the Fenix incense sticks, Ecuador for the incense bars and the Netherlands for the floral water.
