Kanna and its botanical name

Kanna is the name under which the products on this page are sold. Their labels give the plant as Sceletium tortuosum (L.) N.E.Br. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP), compiled at Kew, now lists that name as a synonym of Mesembryanthemum tortuosum L., which Linnaeus published in 1753, so both names refer to the same plant. It belongs to the ice plant family (Aizoaceae). As with everything Mycotrop sells, the kanna products are collectible items and are not for consumption.

The five kanna products compared

The five products share the plant name but differ in form. The powder is the only one sold by weight up to 1 kg. The dry extract comes in small glass jars of 2 g, 5 g or 20 g, and the tincture in a single 10 ml bottle. The paste is the smallest unit at 0.5 g, and the gummies come as one pouch of five pieces. The ratios 50:1 and 2:1 are printed on the labels; the labels do not explain how they were obtained, so this page does not either.

Labels and declared origins

All five products carry the Maya or Maya Herbs label of Maya World Trading BV in Haarlem, the Netherlands. The country printed on the label is South Africa for the fermented paste and Thailand for the powder. For the dry extract, the pouch shown on its page says Thailand while the jar labels say South Africa, so no origin is given for it here. A country on a label tells you where the product was made; it does not say where the plants grew. According to the WCVP, the species is native only to the Cape Provinces.
