Reported effects and traditional use

Sceletium tortuosum, kanna or kougoed, is a succulent plant of southern Africa. According to a 2021 review, the San and Khoikhoi have long used it, notably in Namaqualand and the Karoo; its name means ‘something to chew’. The oldest known written record is an illustration by Simon van der Stel dated 1685.

Traditional accounts and reviews describe a lighter mood and relaxation. These descriptions rest mostly on historical testimony, animal studies and small human trials with a standardised extract.

Known compoundsMesembrine-type alkaloids (mesembrine, mesembrenone, mesembrenol). Mesembrine inhibits the serotonin transporter in binding assays; PDE4 inhibition has also been reported.
Reported effectsA lighter mood and relaxation, described by historical sources and reviews; they rest on testimony, animal studies and small human trials (16 volunteers in one of them).
Traditional useSan and Khoikhoi of southern Africa (Namaqualand, Karoo); the name kougoed means ‘something to chew’; first written record in 1685 (Manganyi et al. 2021).
State of researchIn vitro and animal studies and a few small human trials with a standardised extract; toxicological studies are still needed. No health claim is authorised for kanna in the EU.

Good to know

  • Kanna alkaloids inhibit the serotonin transporter, the target of SSRI antidepressants, so an interaction with serotonergic medicines is theoretically possible (Makolo et al. 2019).
  • Safety data are limited: toxicological studies are still needed (Manganyi et al. 2021).

The jar and its label

The only photo shows a small black jar with rounded corners and a green label: the Maya Herbs logo, "Kanna Paste" in large white letters, a Latin name below it and a "Made in South Africa" seal. The address of Maya World Trading BV in Haarlem and the website mayaherbs.com are printed there too. The weight is not legible on the label; the 0.5 g comes from the product data, and the contents of the jar are not visible.

One botanical name, two spellings

The label spells the name "Sceletium tortosum", without the u of the botanical spelling tortuosum; this page follows the WCVP spelling. The WCVP of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts Mesembryanthemum tortuosum L., published by Linnaeus in 1753, as the name of this plant; Sceletium tortuosum (L.) N.E.Br., a combination of 1926, is a synonym. The species belongs to the Aizoaceae and is native to the Cape Provinces of South Africa. The Made in South Africa seal names the country where the product was made.

A paste, not a powder

The same species is offered in other forms in the Kanna category. A 0.5 g paste cannot be compared with a powder or an extract on weight alone: the form and the label of each product page are to be read separately.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
