Name, family and native range

Kanna is the name under which Sceletium tortuosum (L.) N.E.Br. is sold, and it is the name printed on this pouch. That combination was published in 1926. Linnaeus had described the plant much earlier, in 1753, as Mesembryanthemum tortuosum, and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants now lists this original name as the accepted one. The species belongs to the Aizoaceae and is native to the Cape Provinces of South Africa. The label names the country where the product was made, not where the plants were grown, so this page gives no growing region.

The pouch and the photos

The first photo shows a kraft-paper pouch with the green Maya Herbs label beside a clay bowl of powder. Below the product name, the label has a net-weight field, left blank in the photo, the “Made in Thailand” mark, the address of Maya World Trading BV in Haarlem and the website mayaherbs.com. Two more photos show the powder in the bowl and as a loose heap in which fine fibres are visible. The last photo shows a flowering plant.

Other kanna formats

For a smaller quantity or a different form, the dry kanna extract 50:1 comes in 2 g, 5 g or 20 g glass jars, and the fermented kanna paste in 0.5 g. A 2:1 tincture in a 10 ml bottle and Berry gummies complete the Kanna category.

Packaging and delivery

All products are sold strictly as collectible or souvenir items. Orders are prepared on business days and shipped in neutral outer packaging that does not describe the contents. When tracking is available, the link is sent by email after dispatch. Delivery estimates and the 14-day withdrawal right with its statutory exceptions are explained on Delivery, tracking and returns.

Frequently asked questions

Which sizes can I order?

Four: 25 g, 100 g, 250 g and 1 kg. You select the size before adding the product to the cart.

What is printed on the pouch label?

Maya Herbs, Kanna, Sceletium tortuosum, “Powdered”, a “Made in Thailand” mark, a net-weight field and the name and Haarlem address of Maya World Trading BV.

Does “Made in Thailand” mean the plant grows there?

Not necessarily. The mark names the country where the product was made. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants gives the native range of the species as the Cape Provinces of South Africa.

How does the powder differ from the dry kanna extract?

The powder is the ground plant, sold in sizes from 25 g to 1 kg. The dry extract carries the ratio 50:1 on its jar label and comes in 2 g, 5 g or 20 g.
