Chaliponga: trade name and species

Chaliponga is a trade name rather than a botanical one. The species behind it is Diplopterys cabrerana (Cuatrec.) B.Gates, a liana in the Malpighiaceae. Its original 1958 name, Banisteriopsis cabrerana, is now listed as a synonym, so both names refer to one plant. Instead of repeating the botany in full, this page helps you compare the products on offer. As with everything Mycotrop sells, the leaves in this category are collectible botanical items and are not for consumption.

Important: a plant that contains DMT

Good to know

This species is known to contain DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine) or related tryptamines. Combined with a plant that contains MAOIs, as in ayahuasca, it can cause serious interactions with many medicines and other substances.

Not suitable for anyone with a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, for people with heart disease, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Never with antidepressants or other psychoactive substances.
We do not give any preparation method, extraction method or dosage for this plant.

The two whole-leaf products compared

Both products consist of whole, uncut leaves of the same species, so the choice comes down to the declared origin and the quantity. One gives Napo, Peru as its origin, the other Napo, Ecuador. The product names state only "Napo" and the country; no more precise location is given. Within each product, the pack sizes differ only in weight: 50 g, 250 g or 1 kg. No supplier brand is named for either product.

Product	Plant part and form	Declared origin	Pack sizes
Chaliponga from Napo, Peru – whole leaves	Leaves, whole	Napo, Peru	50 g, 250 g, 1 kg
Chaliponga from Napo, Ecuador – whole leaves	Leaves, whole	Napo, Ecuador	50 g, 250 g, 1 kg

Declared origins and the wild range

The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP), compiled at Kew, counts Peru and Ecuador among the countries where Diplopterys cabrerana occurs naturally, so both declared origins fall inside its wild range. The same checklist adds Colombia, Venezuela and the north of Brazil. National plant lists from Brazil and Colombia classify it as a liana and record it in Amazonian forest, and in Colombia also in the Andes region.

Choosing between the chaliponga listings

Mycotrop has three chaliponga listings in total. The two whole-leaf products above are filed in this category: pick the Peru or the Ecuador one according to the origin you prefer. They are also the only ones offered in a 1 kg pack. The third, the Herborist chaliponga listing, is filed under the Smartshop instead. It is supplied by Herborist, comes in 50 g and 250 g and has no declared origin; its page also covers the classification and distribution of the species in more depth.

Related categories

Chaliponga sits within the Smartshop. Banisteriopsis caapi is another member of the Malpighiaceae, and the products made from that vine have their own Banisteriopsis caapi category. Items with a declared origin in Peru or Ecuador are also found in the Palo Santo category, which mainly groups wood and resin of Bursera graveolens.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.

Discreet delivery

Orders are packed on working days and leave in plain outer packaging that does not describe the contents. Once your order has shipped, we email you the tracking link when one is available. Estimated delivery times, right of withdrawal and exceptions: Delivery, tracking and returns.

Frequently asked questions

Is chaliponga a scientific name?

No, it is a trade name. The name GBIF and the WCVP accept for the species is Diplopterys cabrerana.

Why do some sources say Banisteriopsis cabrerana?

That was the name under which the species was published in 1958. After its transfer to Diplopterys in 1979 it became a synonym; both names mean the same plant.

What is the difference between the two products?

The declared origin: Napo, Peru for one and Napo, Ecuador for the other. Both contain whole leaves and come in 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg.

Which pack sizes can I order?

Each whole-leaf product offers 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg, and the options differ only in weight. The Herborist listing in the Smartshop comes in 50 g and 250 g.

Are both origins within the plant’s native range?

Yes. The WCVP includes both Peru and Ecuador among the countries where Diplopterys cabrerana is native.

How is the order shipped?

In neutral outer packaging. If tracking is available, the link reaches you by email after dispatch. The 14-day withdrawal right applies with statutory exceptions, as set out on the delivery and returns page.
