Traditional use and composition
Tabernanthe iboga is a forest shrub of the Apocynaceae family, native to Central Africa (Gabon, Cameroon, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo). Its root bark has a central place in Bwiti, a religious tradition of Gabon. According to a 2025 anthropological study, traditional Bwiti is found among at least twenty ethnic groups of the country; the best studied is the Bwete of the Mitsogho, who are generally considered its founders.
Among the Fang, Bwiti took a form syncretic with Christianity, described by the anthropologist James Fernandez in 1982. Collective ceremonies are held mostly at night, accompanied by the eight-stringed ngombi harp, drums and dancing (Samorini 2025).
| Known compounds | Iboga-type monoterpenoid indole alkaloids: ibogaine, ibogamine and voacangine in the root bark (Iyer et al. 2021). |
|---|---|
| Traditional use | Root bark at the heart of Bwiti, practised in Gabon by at least twenty ethnic groups (Mitsogho, Punu, Fang…); ceremonies mostly at night, and initiations. |
| Where the use comes from | Gabon: the Mitsogho are generally considered the founders of Bwiti, which later spread to other groups; Fang Bwiti is syncretic with Christianity (Samorini 2025). |
| State of research | Alkaloids studied in chemistry and pharmacology (2021 review). No health claim is authorised for the plant in the EU. |
About Tabernanthe iboga
Tabernanthe iboga Baill. is an accepted species in the World Checklist of Vascular Plants. The name was published by Baillon in 1888, in the Bulletin mensuel de la Société linnéenne de Paris. Its native range covers Cameroon, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, Angola and the Cabinda enclave. Several names are now listed as synonyms, among them Tabernanthe bocca, Tabernanthe mannii and Tabernanthe pubescens. Vernacular names recorded in GBIF include iboga, eboka and ibogo.
The bottle and its label
The cover photo shows a small dark glass bottle with a black dropper cap and a rust-red label. The label reads Maya, Iboga and Essence 1:25, lists the ingredients and gives the volume, 5 ml. The two other images show the bottle from the back and with the dropper taken out. If you are looking for the dried plant material rather than a liquid, the finely powdered iboga root comes in 5 g, 25 g or 100 g. Other tinctures and liquid extracts are grouped under Extracts.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
- Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
- Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
- The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
