Important: a plant that contains DMT

Good to know

This species is known to contain DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine) or related tryptamines. Combined with a plant that contains MAOIs, as in ayahuasca, it can cause serious interactions with many medicines and other substances.

  • Not suitable for anyone with a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, for people with heart disease, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Never with antidepressants or other psychoactive substances.
  • We do not give any preparation method, extraction method or dosage for this plant.

Traditional use and composition

Anadenanthera peregrina is a tree of the Caribbean and South America known as yopo and cohoba. Its seeds appear in the ethnographic record of several peoples of the Orinoco basin (Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil), who use them in ritual and shamanic settings.

Friar Ramón Pané, whom Christopher Columbus asked to record the beliefs of the Taíno of Hispaniola, described cohoba in an account completed around 1498. Among the Piaroa and Cuiva of Venezuela, yopo is tied to narratives central to their cosmology; Piaroa shamans still regard it as essential (Rodd and Sumabila 2011).

Known compoundsTryptamines: bufotenine (5-hydroxy-DMT) is the main alkaloid of the seeds; DMT and N-oxide derivatives have also been reported (Fish et al. 1955).
Traditional useOrinoco peoples (including the Piaroa and the Cuiva) and, historically, the Taíno of the Greater Antilles: ritual and shamanic use.
Where the use comes fromOrinoco basin, Colombian and Brazilian Amazon, Caribbean. Archaeological finds attributed to the genus Anadenanthera in South America go back about 3,000 years.
State of researchChemistry well documented; ethnographic and pharmacological studies limited. No health claim is authorised in the EU for this plant.

Botanical identity and native range

Linnaeus described the species as Mimosa peregrina, and it is also found under the synonym Piptadenia peregrina. The name in use today, Anadenanthera peregrina, was published by Spegazzini in 1923. It is the accepted name in the World Checklist of Vascular Plants, compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and in the GBIF backbone. The native range covers the Caribbean islands (Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, the Lesser Antilles, Trinidad and Tobago), Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Bolivia and northern, north-eastern and south-eastern Brazil. Botanical references record the common names yopo, cohoba and, in Portuguese, paricá.

Yopo and cebil

Cebil is a different species of the same genus. The cebil products in our range come from Peru and are labelled Anadenanthera colubrina: whole cebil seeds and powdered cebil seeds. When you compare them, go by the botanical name: A. peregrina for yopo, A. colubrina for cebil. The Yopo and cebil category lists the cebil products side by side.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
