Botanical name and native range
The name Silene capensis was published by Otth in de Candolle’s Prodromus in 1824. Kew’s World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) now lists it as a synonym of Silene undulata subsp. undulata; the species Silene undulata itself was named by Aiton in 1789. WCVP gives the native range as Zimbabwe to South Africa: Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, and the Cape Provinces, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and northern provinces of South Africa. In English the plant is also called wavy catchfly or Cape catchfly.
Powder or whole root
If you prefer the root uncut, the whole African dream root from South Africa is listed separately. A liquid form is available as the 1:1 root tincture. This page covers only the powder.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
