From Nymphaea nelumbo to Nelumbo nucifera

Linnaeus included the plant in Species Plantarum in 1753 as Nymphaea nelumbo, among the water lilies, with the habitat note "in Indiis", in the Indies. Gaertner published the name Nelumbo nucifera in 1788 in De Fructibus et Seminibus Plantarum, and Willdenow added Nelumbium speciosum in 1799. WCVP accepts Gaertner's name and places the plant in the family Nelumbonaceae, apart from the water-lily family Nymphaeaceae; GBIF classifies Nelumbonaceae in the order Proteales.

Native range

According to WCVP, Nelumbo nucifera is native over a very wide area: from southern European Russia, Ukraine, the Caucasus and Iran through Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and the Himalaya to Myanmar, Thailand, Indochina, China, Korea, Japan and the Russian Far East, and south through the Philippines, Java and New Guinea to Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland. It is recorded as introduced in Italy, Romania, Benin, Gabon, the Caribbean and the south-eastern United States. Checklists describe it as an aquatic herb.

Other lotus flowers in the shop

Two further products contain the same species: finely cut Nelumbo nucifera flowers from Thailand and a whole Nelumbo nucifera flower from India. The blue lotus from Herborist is a different plant, Nymphaea caerulea, a water lily of the family Nymphaeaceae.
