The lotus and its family
The name Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. dates from 1788. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants, compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts it as a species of the Nelumbonaceae, the lotus family, and lists older names such as Nelumbium indicum Poir. and Nelumbo nelumbo (L.) H.Karst. as synonyms. Despite the shared word, the lotus belongs to a different family from the water lilies of the genus Nymphaea (Nymphaeaceae). Recorded common names include sacred lotus, East Indian lotus and oriental lotus.
Native range
The recorded native range is wide. It extends from Ukraine, southern Russia and Iran across the Indian subcontinent, China, Korea and Japan to South-East Asia, New Guinea and northern Australia. Thailand, the country on this pouch, is part of it.
