These are the dried flowers of blue pea, Clitoria ternatea, sold whole. The kraft pouch has a green Maya Herbs label with Blue Pea, Clitoria ternatea, Whole and a Made in Thailand seal. The supplier gives flower as the plant part, whole as the form and Thailand as the country, with Blue Pea and Pigeon Wings as common names. A Linnaean species of the legume family
Linnaeus described Clitoria ternatea in Species Plantarum in 1753. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts the name and places the species in Fabaceae, the family of peas and beans. GBIF lists English names such as butterfly pea, blue pea and Asian pigeonwings.
Where it is native, and where it is not
The checklist gives the species as native to tropical and southern Africa, to parts of the Arabian Peninsula, to southern China and to Taiwan. Thailand appears among the many tropical countries where it is recorded as introduced, alongside India, Sri Lanka and Brazil. The Thai origin on the label therefore refers to where these flowers come from, not to the natural range of the plant.
