Cola nitida seed powder from Herborist

This is kola nut ground to a fine, reddish-brown powder. The "nut" is in fact the seed of Cola nitida, a tree recorded in English as kola or Gbanja kola. The Herborist label names the plant and the form, powder; the supplier listing linked to this product gives seed as the plant part and Brazil as the country of origin. Mycotrop stocks three sizes, 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg, all filled with the same powder.

From Sterculia to Cola

Ventenat first described the species in 1805 as Sterculia nitida, in his illustrated work on the plants of the Jardin de la Malmaison. In 1832 Schott and Endlicher placed it in the genus Cola in Meletemata Botanica, which gives the name in use today. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP), compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts Cola nitida in the Malvaceae and lists names such as Cola vera and Cola astrophora as synonyms. The plant checklist of the Democratic Republic of the Congo records it as a tree.

Native range

WCVP sums up the native range as West and west-central tropical Africa. Its list runs from Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Mali and Ivory Coast through Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria to Cameroon, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the islands of the Gulf of Guinea. The species is recorded as introduced in Guinea-Bissau, the Central African Republic, the Comoros, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Trinidad and Tobago, the Dominican Republic and the Windward Islands. Brazil appears on neither list, so the Brazilian origin of this powder rests on the supplier listing alone.

Kola in another format

Besides this powder, the shop lists a kola nut seed tincture made from the same species.

Frequently asked questions

Is a kola nut really a nut?

Not in the botanical sense. It is the seed of Cola nitida; the supplier listing gives seed as the plant part, while the label keeps the trade name kola nut.

Which pack sizes are available?

Three: 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg of the same powder.

Where does the powder come from?

The supplier listing gives Brazil. The species itself is native to West and west-central tropical Africa; the pouch label names no country.

How does it differ from the kola tincture?

This product is the seed itself, ground to a powder. The tincture is a separate liquid product made from the same species.
