Yerba maté is the common name of Ilex paraguariensis, an evergreen member of the holly genus. This product is its finely cut leaf: the supplier listing gives leaf as the plant part, "finely cut" as the form and Brazil as the country of origin. The species
Auguste de Saint-Hilaire published Ilex paraguariensis in 1822 in the Mémoires du Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts the name and gives its native range as Paraguay, Uruguay, north-eastern Argentina and the north-eastern, southern, south-eastern and west-central regions of Brazil; it is recorded as introduced in Hawaii. Flora e Funga do Brasil describes it as a tree of several forest types, among them the mixed ombrophilous forest of southern Brazil, seasonal semi-deciduous forest, gallery forest and cerrado. In Portuguese it is called erva-mate.
Leaf and stem in the photos
The first photo shows a kraft-paper pouch with an ochre Herborist label; the second shows the contents close up: flat, olive-green leaf fragments mixed with pale pieces of stem. If you collect several holly species, the shop also lists finely cut guayusa leaves from Ecuador, which come from Ilex guayusa, a relative from the same genus.
