Traditional use
Curcuma longa, turmeric, is a plant of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) native to India according to the Kew checklist. Its rhizome serves as a spice and a yellow dye; in India it is associated with wedding ceremonies and religious rites, and the plant features in Ayurveda and other folk medicines (Elhawary et al. 2024).
The colouring matter is curcumin, a curcuminoid: pure turmeric powders analysed in 2006 contained 3.14% on average. A 2017 medicinal-chemistry review describes curcumin as unstable, poorly bioavailable and an improbable starting point for a drug.
| Known compounds | Curcuminoids, including curcumin (3.14% on average in pure turmeric powders analysed in 2006), and an essential oil (turmerones, zingiberene). |
|---|---|
| Traditional use | Spice and dye; wedding ceremonies and religious rites in India; Ayurveda and folk medicines. |
| State of research | More than 120 clinical trials on curcumin, with no conclusive result according to critical reviews (Nelson et al. 2017). No health claim is authorised in the EU for turmeric. |
Good to know
- Cases of acute hepatitis, mostly cholestatic, have been reported with turmeric supplements: 28 reports in Italy in the first half of 2019, with causality judged at least possible in all but one case (Menniti-Ippolito et al. 2020).
Botanical identity
Kew’s World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) accepts Curcuma longa L., which Linnaeus listed on page 2 of Species Plantarum in 1753. Synonyms include Curcuma domestica Valeton and Amomum curcuma Jacq. The checklist gives India as the only native area and records the plant as introduced in more than fifty other regions. GBIF lists turmeric and Indian saffron as English names, curcuma and safran des Indes in French, Kurkuma and Gelbwurzel in German.
Jar and label
The single photo shows the jar from the front against a white background, with a round green seal at the edge of the label and the brand logo on the lid. The label also carries a Portuguese tagline and a seal text, which are not repeated here. Phytolumiar is also the name on the Phytolumiar ginkgo capsules and the maca root capsules in the shop.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
- Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
