Botanical identity
Kew’s World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) accepts Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal, published by Dunal in 1852 in A. P. de Candolle’s Prodromus. Linnaeus had first described the plant as Physalis somnifera. The recorded native range is wide: much of Africa, the Canary Islands, the Mediterranean from Spain to Greece, Cyprus and Türkiye, the Arabian Peninsula, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and parts of China. GBIF lists the English names winter cherry and Indian ginseng and, in French, withania somnifère and ashwagandha.
