Reported effects and traditional use

Ginkgo biloba is the only living species of the Ginkgoaceae family, a tree native to China. According to the EMA assessment report, the earliest known mention of internal use of the leaf in Chinese medicine dates from 1505.

Published work mostly concerns standardised leaf extracts. Powdered leaf, dry extract and seed are different materials, with different compositions.

Known compoundsLeaf: flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol and isorhamnetin derivatives), terpene lactones (ginkgolides A, B, C, J and bilobalide) and alkylphenols such as ginkgolic acids. Ginkgotoxin occurs in the seeds and leaves.
Traditional useTraditional Chinese medicine: first mention of internal use of the leaf in 1505; the leaf appears in modern Chinese pharmacopoeias (EMA 2014).
State of researchStudies mostly concern standardised leaf extracts. The US NCCIH concludes there is no conclusive evidence of efficacy. No health claim is authorised for ginkgo in the EU.

Good to know

  • Ginkgo leaf may increase the risk of bleeding, particularly with anticoagulants or anti-inflammatory drugs (EMA 2014; NCCIH).
  • Fresh seeds are toxic. Ginkgotoxin, present in the seeds and leaves, has been associated with seizures in reported cases of poisoning (EMA 2014; NCCIH).

A family with one species

The supplier lists the botanical name as Ginkgoaceae, which is the family rather than a species. In the Kew checklist (WCVP) this family holds a single accepted genus, Ginkgo, with a single accepted species, Ginkgo biloba L., published by Linnaeus in 1771. WCVP records it as native to south-eastern China; elsewhere, for example in Japan, Korea and parts of Europe and North America, the tree is listed as introduced. English names include ginkgo and maidenhair tree; in French it is called arbre aux quarante écus, in German Ginkgobaum.

Jar and label

The single photo shows the jar from the front against a white background. The Portuguese label wording also includes a short tagline, which is not repeated here. Phytolumiar is also the name on the maca root capsules in the shop. For ginkgo leaf instead of seed, see the Chinese ginkgo leaf dry extract.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
