Catuaba bark in shredded strips

Traditional use
Trichilia catigua (Meliaceae, the mahogany family) is the tree most often sold in Brazil under the name “catuaba”, a name that covers more than twenty different Brazilian species. A 2017 review (Longhini et al.) reports that the bark is used as a tonic in Brazilian folk medicine; the published work consists mostly of laboratory and animal studies.
The bark is rich in tannins and polyphenols: procyanidins, cinchonains (flavolignans) and catiguanins.

Texture and pack
The bowl in the photos holds a loose pile of fine bark splinters in shades from light tan to dark brown. Behind it stands the kraft pouch with the green Maya Herbs label, marked Shredded, and a Made in Brazil seal. As on the other catuaba pouches, the Latin name is printed with a typo, “Trichila catigua”.
About the species
Trichilia catigua belongs to the Meliaceae, the mahogany family. GBIF and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants accept the name, first published by Adrien de Jussieu in 1829. Its recorded native range covers Bolivia, Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina and much of Brazil, from the North region down to the South. In Portuguese, GBIF lists names such as catiguá and catiguá-vermelho.

For an even, uniform material, the catuaba bark powder is milled from the same species. The catuaba dry extract is sold in far smaller packs.
