Traditional use
Trichilia catigua (Meliaceae, the mahogany family) is the tree most often sold in Brazil under the name “catuaba”, a name that covers more than twenty different Brazilian species. A 2017 review (Longhini et al.) reports that the bark is used as a tonic in Brazilian folk medicine; the published work consists mostly of laboratory and animal studies.
The bark is rich in tannins and polyphenols: procyanidins, cinchonains (flavolignans) and catiguanins.

Botanical identity
Adrien de Jussieu described Trichilia catigua in 1829, in Saint-Hilaire’s Flora Brasiliae Meridionalis. GBIF and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants accept the name and place it in the Meliaceae. The checklist gives a native range covering Bolivia, Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina and five regions of Brazil: North, Northeast, West-Central, Southeast and South. Catuaba is the trade name the supplier uses; both the label and the supplier listing tie this product to Trichilia catigua.
The pouch and the powder
The first photo shows a kraft stand-up pouch with a green Maya Herbs label: Catuaba in large letters, the Latin name, the word Powder and a Made in Brazil seal. On this label the Latin name is printed as “Trichila catigua”, without the second i. In a terracotta bowl beside the pouch lies a heap of fine, light reddish-brown powder; the second photo shows the bowl on its own.

The same species is also available as shredded catuaba bark, with visible fibres, and as a catuaba dry extract in much smaller packs.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
