Leaf rather than root
The other loose muira puama products in this shop are root, or bark and root. For this powder the supplier names the leaf, while the pouch itself states only the species and the form, Powder. If you compare plant parts, this is the detail that sets the product apart.
The species
The accepted name is Ptychopetalum olacoides Benth., in the Olacaceae; the description by Bentham appeared in volume 2 of the London Journal of Botany in 1843. Flora e Funga do Brasil classes the species as a tree. Plants of the World Online, from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, gives its native range as French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana and northern Brazil. Among the vernacular names collected by GBIF are marapuama and muira-puama.
Related muira puama products
The same species is available as shredded muira puama root from Brazil, as a dry extract of bark and root and as muira puama capsules.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
