Reported effects and traditional use
Ptychopetalum olacoides, muira puama, is an Amazonian tree of the Olacaceae family, also called ‘potency wood’, according to the USDA ethnobotanical database. Peoples of Amazonia use its root in their traditional medicine, according to a 2007 study.
It is reputed an aphrodisiac in the folk tradition of Brazil and Suriname, and is used as a ‘nerve tonic’ in the Brazilian Amazon. Published studies on the plant are mostly chemical or carried out in mice.

A tree of northern South America
George Bentham described Ptychopetalum olacoides in 1843 in the London Journal of Botany. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, now lists it as an accepted species of the Olacaceae and gives its native range as French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname and northern Brazil. Muira puama and muirapuama are its Portuguese common names; GBIF also records marapuama. The Made in Brazil seal names the country where the product was made; it does not say where the plants were harvested.
What "dry extract" means on this page
