  • Padauk wood is described as a cause of occupational allergic contact dermatitis (Kiec-Swierczynska et al. 2004).

About the species

The German botanist Taubert published Pterocarpus soyauxii in 1895, in Hooker’s Icones Plantarum. Kew’s World Checklist of Vascular Plants accepts it as a species of the Fabaceae, the legume family. Recorded English names include African coralwood, African padauk, Gabon padauk and barwood; in French it is recorded as bois rouge.

Native range

The checklist limits the native range to west-central Africa: Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, Cabinda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic. Gabon, the country on the pouch, lies within it.

The photos

Besides the pouch and the shredded wood, one picture shows a living tree with dark, furrowed bark, rounded leaflets and pale round pods. If you collect other shredded woods, the catalogue also lists shredded uchu sanango wood from Peru.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
