Reported effects and traditional use
Euterpe oleracea, the açaí palm, is a palm of the Arecaceae family native to the Amazon basin. Its fruit is a staple food in Amazonia: according to a 2023 review, the plant has been cultivated there for thousands of years as a multipurpose food plant.
Over the past decade açaí has spread worldwide, from an Amazonian staple to a widely traded product. Reviews stress, however, that the properties studied have mostly been examined in the laboratory and in animals, and that human clinical data remain limited.
| Known compounds | Anthocyanins (mainly cyanidin-3-glucoside), other polyphenols, oleic and linoleic fatty acids, dietary fibre (Delphim et al. 2026). |
|---|---|
| Traditional use | A staple food of Amazonian populations; a food plant cultivated for thousands of years in tropical America (Laurindo et al. 2023). |
| State of research | Studies are mostly in vitro and in animals; human clinical data are still limited (Delphim et al. 2026). No health claim is authorised for açaí in the EU. |
The açaí palm
Euterpe oleracea was described by the German botanist Martius in 1824, in his work on the natural history of palms. Kew’s World Checklist of Vascular Plants accepts the name and places it in the Arecaceae, the palm family; Euterpe badiocarpa, Euterpe beardii and Euterpe brasiliana are among its synonyms. Açaí and assai palm are recorded English names; the name used on the pouch is Açaí.
Native range
The checklist gives a native range in northern South America: the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador, and also Trinidad and Tobago. Brazil, the country on the label, lies within it.
Another powdered plant product
The shop also stocks powdered cacao beans from Ghana, Theobroma cacao, sold by weight.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
