Important: a plant that contains MAOIs
Dangerous interactions
This plant contains harmala alkaloids (harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine), which are monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). MAOIs block the breakdown of many substances in the body.
- Never with antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics, other MAOIs), lithium, tramadol or stimulants: risk of serotonin syndrome, which can be fatal.
- Never with other psychoactive substances (MDMA, amphetamines, cocaine, other psychedelics): the effects can become unpredictable and dangerous.
- Foods rich in tyramine (aged cheeses, cured meats, fermented products): risk of a sharp rise in blood pressure.
- Not suitable for people with heart disease or high blood pressure, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- We do not give any preparation method or dosage for this plant.
Traditional use and composition
Banisteriopsis caapi is a vine of the Malpighiaceae family found in the Amazon basin. It is best known as one of the ingredients of ayahuasca, a drink that Indigenous peoples and local communities in Amazonia have long used in ritual and traditional settings.
In Brazil, this use has spread to religious organisations such as the União do Vegetal and Santo Daime. A 2026 review lists 119 ethnotaxa of B. caapi, that is, 119 folk names for types of the vine.
| Known compounds | β-carboline alkaloids: harmine, harmaline and tetrahydroharmine, which inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAOIs). Their levels vary widely from one sample to another (Santos et al. 2020). |
|---|---|
| Traditional use | An ingredient of ayahuasca in Amazonia, notably among the Shuar of Ecuador; the Siona distinguish at least 18 types of the vine (Santos et al. 2020). Taken up by Brazilian religions such as the União do Vegetal and Santo Daime. |
| State of research | Research is mostly chemical: the wide variability in levels makes the material hard to standardise (Santos et al. 2020). No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU. |
"Yellow" is a trade name, not a botanical variety
Caapi vine is traded under colour and place names such as Yellow, Red, Cielo or Caupuri. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP), compiled at Kew and published through POWO, lists no subspecies or varieties under Banisteriopsis caapi, so these names say nothing botanical about the plant. Here the name identifies the lot. The same name is used for a cut version, Yellow Ayahuasca shredded vine, which comes in 100 g, 250 g and 1 kg.
About the species
Banisteriopsis caapi is a climber of the Malpighiaceae that POWO places mainly in the wet tropical biome. WCVP records it as native to Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, northern and west-central Brazil and north-western Argentina, so Peru lies within its natural range. Every form of the plant in the shop, from shredded vine to leaves and liquid extracts, is listed under Banisteriopsis caapi.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant

Frequently asked questions
What is the vine Banisteriopsis caapi?
It is an Amazonian vine of the Malpighiaceae family, known as one of the ingredients of ayahuasca, a ritual drink of peoples of Amazonia. It contains β-carboline alkaloids (harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine).
Why is caapi flagged as containing MAOIs?
Because its β-carbolines inhibit the enzyme monoamine oxidase, as the pharmacological literature describes. This property explains possible interactions with many medicines, hence the warning shown on the page.
What is the difference between whole and shredded caapi vine?
Both are the vine of Banisteriopsis caapi. This product keeps the vine in uncut sections, as in the photo; the shredded product is the vine cut into small pieces. The sizes differ too: 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg here, 100 g, 250 g and 1 kg for the shredded vine.
Where does this vine come from?
The product name gives Peru. The species is native to Peru and to several neighbouring countries in South America.
Is Yellow Ayahuasca a different species?
No. The product is sold as Banisteriopsis caapi, and WCVP recognises no varieties within that species. Yellow is a trade name.
Which sizes are available?
50 g, 250 g and 1 kg, each with the same whole vine material.
