Reported effects and traditional use
Sceletium tortuosum, kanna or kougoed, is a succulent plant of southern Africa. According to a 2021 review, the San and Khoikhoi have long used it, notably in Namaqualand and the Karoo; its name means ‘something to chew’. The oldest known written record is an illustration by Simon van der Stel dated 1685.
Traditional accounts and reviews describe a lighter mood and relaxation. These descriptions rest mostly on historical testimony, animal studies and small human trials with a standardised extract.
| Known compounds | Mesembrine-type alkaloids (mesembrine, mesembrenone, mesembrenol). Mesembrine inhibits the serotonin transporter in binding assays; PDE4 inhibition has also been reported. |

| Reported effects | A lighter mood and relaxation, described by historical sources and reviews; they rest on testimony, animal studies and small human trials (16 volunteers in one of them). |
| Traditional use | San and Khoikhoi of southern Africa (Namaqualand, Karoo); the name kougoed means ‘something to chew’; first written record in 1685 (Manganyi et al. 2021). |
| State of research | In vitro and animal studies and a few small human trials with a standardised extract; toxicological studies are still needed. No health claim is authorised for kanna in the EU. |
Good to know
- Kanna alkaloids inhibit the serotonin transporter, the target of SSRI antidepressants, so an interaction with serotonergic medicines is theoretically possible (Makolo et al. 2019).
- Safety data are limited: toxicological studies are still needed (Manganyi et al. 2021).
What the pouch shows
The product photo shows the pouch from both sides. On the front, “5 gummies per package” and “Net Wt: 15 g” sit below the Berry band. On the back, the ingredient list, the content (5 gummies, net weight 15 g) and the storage advice are printed in orange, followed by fields for the lot number and a date, a QR code, a barcode and the address mayaherbs.com. Only part of the ingredient list is legible in the photo, so the table above lists only the words that can be read.
Other kanna formats
The gummies are the only kanna product in the shop sold by the piece. If you are comparing formats, the kanna tincture 2:1 comes in a 10 ml dropper bottle with the Maya label, and the dry extract 50:1 in 2 g, 5 g or 20 g jars. A finely powdered herb and a fermented paste complete the range under Kanna.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
- Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
- Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
- The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
