Pau d’arco bark as a powder

The bark on this page is labelled Handroanthus impetiginosus, a tree of the trumpet-creeper family (Bignoniaceae). Pau d’arco is one of the common names GBIF records for it, together with ipê-roxo in Portuguese and pink lapacho or pink trumpet tree in English. The supplier, Maya Herbs, lists the part as bark, the form as powder and the country as Brazil; the photos show a dark brown, finely ground powder. Mycotrop stocks 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg.

Name and range

The name Handroanthus impetiginosus was published by Mattos in 1970 and is the one the World Checklist of Vascular Plants accepts today; the checklist lists Tabebuia impetiginosa and Tabebuia avellanedae among its synonyms. It records a native range from central and southern Mexico through Central America to Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname, French Guiana, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, north-western Argentina and much of Brazil.

Pouch and photos

The cover photo shows a kraft stand-up pouch with a green Maya Herbs label reading Pau d’Arco, Handroanthus impetiginosus and Powdered, with a Made in Brazil seal, next to a bowl heaped with powder. The second photo is a close view of that bowl.

The Peruvian shredded bark

Mycotrop also sells shredded pau d’arco bark from Peru. It is cut rather than ground and comes from a different species, sold as Tabebuia serratifolia.

Preparing and enjoying

Ceremonial cacao is pure cacao paste: grate or chop it, then melt it in hot water or milk without letting it boil. Teas and leaves are infused as directed on the label.

Precautions

  • Cacao contains theobromine and a little caffeine; guayusa, mate and guarana contain caffeine: keep to moderate amounts if you are pregnant, sensitive to caffeine or have a heart condition.
  • Theobromine is toxic to dogs and cats: keep cacao out of their reach.
  • If a blend contains other plants, read their product pages before use.

Storage

Keep cacao and teas dry, in a closed container, away from light, heat and strong odours.
