Shredded tahuari bark from Peru
This pouch holds pau d’arco bark, shredded into long, pale straw-coloured strands with a few darker flakes. Maya Herbs sells it as Tahuari bark and gives the plant part as bark, the form as shredded and the country as Peru. Mycotrop offers it in 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg.

Traditional use
Handroanthus serratifolius (label: Tabebuia serratifolia), sold as yellow pau d’arco, is a large tree of the trumpet-vine family (Bignoniaceae) of tropical South America and Trinidad, according to the Kew checklist. In this genus it is mainly the inner bark of red lapacho, Handroanthus impetiginosus, that is used in South American traditional phytomedicine; the reference review (Gómez Castellanos et al. 2009) deals with that related species.
Lapachol, a naphthoquinone, has been isolated from H. serratifolius, along with other naphthoquinones such as α-lapachone (Costa et al. 2017); red lapacho also contains β-lapachone. Research deals mainly with isolated compounds, in the laboratory and in animals.

One tree, several names
Martin Vahl first described the tree as Bignonia serratifolia. It was later placed in Tecoma and then Tabebuia, the name still used in the trade, and in 2007 S.O. Grose moved it to Handroanthus. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants accepts Handroanthus serratifolius and lists Tabebuia serratifolia as a synonym. GBIF records pau-d’arco as a Portuguese name, tahuari as a Spanish one and yellow ipe as an English one. The supplier label prints the Latin name as “Tabetuia serratifoli”, a misspelling.
Range and origin
According to the checklist, the species is native to Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and all five regions of Brazil. The supplier gives Peru as the country of this lot, and the pouch carries a Made in Peru seal.
The pouch and the bark
The cover photo shows the kraft stand-up pouch with a green Maya Herbs label reading Pau d’Arco and Shredded, next to a terracotta bowl of fibrous, light golden bark strands. The second photo shows the bowl alone, where a few larger, darker bark pieces are visible among the fibres.
Storing your botanicals

Frequently asked questions
Is yellow pau d’arco (Handroanthus serratifolius) the same tree as red lapacho?
No. Red lapacho is Handroanthus impetiginosus (formerly Tabebuia impetiginosa), the most studied species. H. serratifolius is another species of the same genus, from which lapachol has also been isolated.
Is pau d’arco the same as tahuari?
Here, yes. The supplier sells this bark as Tahuari, and GBIF lists tahuari as a Spanish name of Handroanthus serratifolius.
Why do two Latin names appear?
Tabebuia serratifolia is the older name still used by sellers; Handroanthus serratifolius is the name accepted today by the World Checklist.
