Cyperus articulatus L. was described by Linnaeus in Species Plantarum in 1753 and is accepted by Kew’s World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP). Its recorded native range is unusually wide: it spans the tropical and subtropical Americas from the south-eastern United States to Argentina, much of Africa and Madagascar, parts of the Middle East and southern Asia, and Queensland.
