Traditional use and composition

Gentianella alborosea, hercampuri, is a high-altitude gentian of Peru, cited in the country’s folk medicine (Acero et al. 2006). In the markets of Lima, several species of Gentianella are sold under the name hercampuri (Bussmann et al. 2013).

A new sesterterpenoid, alborosin, was isolated from the species in 2000. Studies remain very scarce. The populations, confined to high altitudes, are vulnerable to large-scale collection (Bussmann et al. 2007).

Known compoundsOne sesterterpenoid, alborosin, isolated in 2000; no complete inventory published in the sources consulted.
Traditional usePeru: a folk-medicine plant sold in markets under the name hercampuri, shared by several species of Gentianella.
State of researchVery few studies: one compound characterised (2000) and one laboratory test on an extract (2006). No human data in the sources consulted. No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU.

A gentian recorded only from Peru

Kew’s World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) accepts Gentianella alborosea (Gilg) Fabris. The species was first described by Gilg in the genus Gentiana as Gentiana alborosea and moved to Gentianella by Fabris in 1955. WCVP lists Peru as its only native area, so the stated origin of this powder matches the recorded range of the species.

Colour and texture

The photos show a finely ground, olive-green powder heaped in a clay bowl, first beside the pouch and then on its own. The texture is even, with no visible leaf fragments.

Dispatch and returns

Your order is prepared on a business day. The leaf powder goes out in neutral packaging that gives no hint of the contents, and a tracking link is emailed after dispatch whenever the shipping service offers one. For delivery estimates and the 14-day withdrawal period with its exceptions, see the Delivery, Tracking & Returns page.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
