About Pinus sylvestris
Linnaeus named the Scots pine in Species Plantarum in 1753, and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) accepts Pinus sylvestris L. in the pine family, Pinaceae. WCVP gives its native range as extending from Spain, France, Great Britain and Scandinavia across central and eastern Europe, including Romania, to Siberia, Mongolia, Manchuria and the Russian Far East. In Portugal, Iceland and parts of North America WCVP records it as introduced.
The needles in the photos

The needles lie loose and straight or slightly curved, with no twigs visible, and range from grey-green to olive. Natural material varies, so length and colour differ between packs. The same species is also available as Scots pine rosin from Portugal, a resin rather than needles.
