A Linnaean name with a wide native range
Carl Linnaeus published Petiveria alliacea in Species Plantarum in 1753, and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) still lists it as the accepted name. WCVP places the species in the small family Petiveriaceae, while the GBIF backbone still files it under Phytolaccaceae, so both family names appear in references. Its native range is unusually broad: from Texas and Florida through Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean to Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and northern Argentina. WCVP records it as introduced in parts of West and Central Africa, India, Sri Lanka and Java.
Texture and appearance
The photos show the labelled pouch with a clay bowl of powder, then the bowl alone. The powder is fine and even, with an olive to khaki green colour. As with any ground plant material, the shade can differ slightly between batches.
