Traditional use and composition

Maytenus ilicifolia, espinheira santa (“holy thorn”), is a shrub of the staff-vine family (Celastraceae) from southern Brazil. It belongs to Brazilian folk medicine and, with a few other species of the country, appears in the lists and monographs of the health agency ANVISA and the Ministry of Health (do Nascimento et al. 2020; Upton et al. 2024).

Its leaves contain terpenoids, including friedelin, flavonoids (catechin, quercetin and kaempferol derivatives), phenols and tannins (Bittar et al. 2024). Research remains mostly experimental.

Known compoundsTerpenoids including friedelin; flavonoids (catechin, quercetin and kaempferol derivatives), phenols and tannins; alkaloids are also cited.
Traditional useFolk medicine of southern Brazil; species cited in official Brazilian lists of plants of interest (ANVISA, Ministry of Health).
State of researchMostly studies on extracts, in the laboratory and in rats; little human data in the sources consulted. No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU.

Good to know

  • A 2020 study in cells and rats shows that extracts can alter the absorption and metabolism of medicines (P-glycoprotein, CYP3A); interactions are therefore possible.

Botanical identity

Kew’s World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) accepts Maytenus ilicifolia Mart. ex Reissek, published in 1861 in Martius’s Flora Brasiliensis. Its synonyms include Monteverdia ilicifolia, the name used in a newer classification of the genus, and Maytenus officinalis Mabb. The recorded native range covers central and southern South America: north-eastern, south-eastern, southern and west-central Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia and northern Argentina.

Colour and texture

Both photos show a fine, even powder in an olive-beige shade, spread in a shallow clay dish; the first also shows the pouch. Its greenish tone sets it apart from the reddish-brown chuchuhuasi bark powder from Peru, which comes from another species of the same genus.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
