Kew’s World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) accepts Sassafras albidum (Nutt.) Nees, published by Nees von Esenbeck in his Systema Laurinarum in 1836. Its synonyms include Laurus albida Nutt. and Laurus sassafras L., the name Linnaeus used. The checklist records the tree as native to eastern North America, from Maine and Ontario south to Florida and west to Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas; Romania is the only area of introduction listed. GBIF gives sassafras and white sassafras as English names, sassafras officinal in French and Fenchelholzbaum in German.
Cut and appearance
