Composition and current knowledge
Hericium erinaceus is an edible mushroom called lion’s mane in English and yamabushitake in Japanese. It is an edible mushroom widely eaten in Asia (Friedman 2015).
Its fruiting bodies and mycelium contain polysaccharides and secondary metabolites: erinacines are extracted from the mycelium and hericenones from the fruiting bodies (Venturella et al. 2021). Studies deal mostly with cells and animals; there are a few human trials, often with small numbers of participants.
| Known compounds | Polysaccharides (including beta-glucans), hericenones, erinacines, hericerins, resorcinols, steroids, mono- and diterpenes, volatile aroma compounds. |
|---|---|
| Traditional use | Edible mushroom widely eaten in Asia; called yamabushitake in Japan. |
| State of research | Studies mostly in cells and animals; a few human trials, often small. No health claim is authorised in the EU for this mushroom. |
Hericium erinaceus in the GBIF backbone
Hericium erinaceus (Bull.) Pers. is the accepted name in GBIF, in the family Hericiaceae of the order Russulales. Bulliard’s original name, Hydnum erinaceus, is listed among the synonyms, as are Clavaria erinaceus and Dryodon erinaceus. English names recorded in GBIF include lion’s mane mushroom, bearded tooth and hedgehog mushroom. In French it is hydne hérisson, in German Igel-Stachelbart and in Japanese ヤマブシタケ (yamabushitake).
What the photos show
Two photos show the bottle: closed, and open with the glass pipette beside it. Two more show the fungus itself, one growing against a tree trunk among autumn leaves and one as a single white fruiting body. They illustrate the species, not the contents of the bottle. Reishi and chaga extracts come in the same bottle and label design, for example the chaga extract (Inonotus obliquus), 30 ml. Lion’s mane in other formats includes the Foodsporen lion’s mane extract and the Foodsporen lion’s mane capsules.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
- Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
- Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
