About Hericium erinaceus

Hericium erinaceus (Bull.) Pers. is an accepted species in the family Hericiaceae, order Russulales. Bulliard first described it as Hydnum erinaceus; the combination in the genus Hericium was published by Persoon in 1797. English names recorded in GBIF include lion’s mane mushroom and bearded tooth. The French name recorded there is hydne hérisson, the German one Igel-Stachelbart.

Bottle, box and label

The product photo shows a dark glass bottle with a black dropper cap next to its box. Both are printed in purple and green with the Foodsporen name and the words Lion’s Mane. The label text is in Dutch and states the 8:1 ratio, the fruiting-body source, the triple extraction, the net content of 30 ml and the alcohol percentage. Foodsporen also offers the same fungus as lion’s mane capsules (60 pieces), and its range includes a reishi extract and a chaga extract in the same 30 ml format.

Functional mushrooms: what we know

Reishi, lion’s mane, chaga, cordyceps and maitake have a long history in Asia and Eastern Europe, both in cooking and in traditional medicine. Modern research consists mainly of laboratory and animal studies: no health claims are authorised in the European Union for these mushrooms, and we do not make any.

Precautions

  • Ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice if you take any medication, especially an anticoagulant or a diabetes medicine, and during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Chaga is rich in oxalates: kidney damage has been reported after heavy, prolonged consumption.
  • Stick to the daily dose stated on the label, and keep out of the reach of children.
  • A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied diet.

Storage

Keep the product tightly closed, dry and away from light; for liquid extracts and tinctures, follow the instructions on the label.
