Lion’s mane in botanical references
GBIF lists Hericium erinaceus (Bull.) Pers. as an accepted species of the Hericiaceae, a family in the order Russulales. The name goes back to Bulliard’s Hydnum erinaceus; Persoon published the combination in Hericium in 1797. Besides lion’s mane mushroom, the English vernacular names recorded for the species include bearded tooth.
The jar and its label
The product photo shows a black jar with a purple and green label. It carries the name Lion’s Mane, short lines in Dutch with the extract details and the count of 60 capsules. If you prefer a liquid, the Foodsporen lion’s mane extract comes in a 30 ml dropper bottle with the same 8:1 ratio on its label. Foodsporen’s Cordyceps CS-4 capsules are also sold as a jar of 60.
Functional mushrooms: what we know
Reishi, lion’s mane, chaga, cordyceps and maitake have a long history in Asia and Eastern Europe, both in cooking and in traditional medicine. Modern research consists mainly of laboratory and animal studies: no health claims are authorised in the European Union for these mushrooms, and we do not make any.
Precautions
- Ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice if you take any medication, especially an anticoagulant or a diabetes medicine, and during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Chaga is rich in oxalates: kidney damage has been reported after heavy, prolonged consumption.
- Stick to the daily dose stated on the label, and keep out of the reach of children.
- A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied diet.
Storage
Keep the product tightly closed, dry and away from light; for liquid extracts and tinctures, follow the instructions on the label.
