Composition and current knowledge
Chaga is the fungus Inonotus obliquus, which grows on birches in boreal forests. According to a 2023 review, the Khanty of Siberia are said to have used it as early as the 12th century, and Indigenous peoples of Canada such as the Cree, Ojibway and Denesuline also have a tradition of use; a 2025 review lists it among the folk remedies of 16th- and 17th-century Russia and Northern Europe.
Its composition is complex: more than 250 secondary metabolites have been described, including polysaccharides (β-glucans), terpenoids (betulin, lanosterol), polyphenols, sterols and melanin. Clinical data in humans remain insufficient.

Inonotus obliquus: names and classification
Inonotus obliquus (Fr.) Pilát is the accepted name in the GBIF taxonomic backbone, placed in the family Hymenochaetaceae, order Hymenochaetales. Over time the species has been filed under several other genera; synonyms recorded in GBIF include Polyporus obliquus, Poria obliqua, Fomes obliquus and Phellinus obliquus. Its vernacular names reflect where it is known: pakurikääpä in Finnish, Schiefer Schillerporling in German and polypore oblique in French.
Powder, whole pieces or extract
