Important: a plant that contains MAOIs

Dangerous interactions

This plant contains harmala alkaloids (harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine), which are monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). MAOIs block the breakdown of many substances in the body.

  • Never with antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics, other MAOIs), lithium, tramadol or stimulants: risk of serotonin syndrome, which can be fatal.
  • Never with other psychoactive substances (MDMA, amphetamines, cocaine, other psychedelics): the effects can become unpredictable and dangerous.
  • Foods rich in tyramine (aged cheeses, cured meats, fermented products): risk of a sharp rise in blood pressure.
  • Not suitable for people with heart disease or high blood pressure, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • We do not give any preparation method or dosage for this plant.

Traditional use and composition

Banisteriopsis muricata is a liana of the Malpighiaceae family found from Mexico to northern Argentina. In trade it is sold as “red caapi” or “red ayahuasca”. The name “ayahuasca” refers mainly to the Amazonian tradition linked to Banisteriopsis caapi, a different species.

For B. muricata, little has been published, whether on traditional use or on chemistry. β-Carbolines (harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine) are typical of B. caapi; in a Brazilian analysis published in 2020, a sample of B. cf. muricata contained none. A 2022 review nevertheless lists it among the Banisteriopsis species that can be used in ayahuasca.

Known compoundsβ-Carbolines characterise B. caapi. For B. muricata the literature is thin: the one sample analysed in 2020 (Santos et al.) contained no detectable β-carboline.
Traditional useLittle published for this species. The known cultural context is that of Amazonian Banisteriopsis lianas, centred on B. caapi.
State of researchVery limited for B. muricata. No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU.

A different species from Banisteriopsis caapi

The Spanish botanist Cavanilles described the plant in 1790 as Banisteria muricata; José Cuatrecasas transferred it to Banisteriopsis in 1958. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants accepts it as a separate species of the Malpighiaceae, with older names such as Banisteriopsis argentea as synonyms and no varieties. Kew’s Plants of the World Online describes it as a climbing shrub of the seasonally dry tropics. Its recorded native range is far wider than that of B. caapi: from Mexico through Central America to Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, most regions of Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina.

Names and the pack

“Red Ayahuasca” is a seller’s name, not a botanical one. Name lists collected by GBIF record mii, miiyabo, tomo and sacha ayawaska for this species in Ecuador and abiu-da-várzea in Brazil. The cover photo shows the kraft pouch with its label beside a clay bowl of the shredded vine, and the second photo the bowl alone: short, tan woody chips. The same species from Ecuador is sold as Ecuadorian Red Ayahuasca; for Banisteriopsis caapi in a similar cut, see Yellow Ayahuasca.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.

No. They are two distinct species of the same genus. “Red caapi” is a trade name; the Amazonian ayahuasca tradition is mainly associated with B. caapi, whose β-carboline profile is well documented.

Is Red Ayahuasca the same plant as Banisteriopsis caapi?

No. The label names Banisteriopsis muricata, a separate accepted species of the same genus and family.

What is printed on the label?

Red Ayahuasca, Banisteriopsis muricata, Shredded – Napo, a Made in Peru seal and the trader, Maya World Trading BV in Haarlem.

Which pack sizes are listed?

100 g, 250 g and 1 kg, all with the same shredded vine.

How does it differ from the Ecuadorian Red Ayahuasca?
