Reported effects and traditional use

Nelumbo nucifera, the sacred lotus, grows mainly in Asia: Thailand, China, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Japan. Hindus regard its flower as sacred and Buddhists the whole plant; it is also a spiritual symbol of ancient Egypt and the national flower of India and Vietnam (Tungmunnithum et al. 2018).

In Asia its seeds are eaten and its leaves and perianth are used in teas. Psychotropic effects are attributed to an alkaloid, nuciferine, without precise description. Laboratory and rodent data show an action on several serotonin and dopamine receptors (Farrell et al. 2016).

Known compoundsFlavonoids (O- and C-glycosides) and alkaloids including nuciferine; contents vary between plant parts.
Reported effectsPsychotropic effects are attributed to nuciferine in the literature, without precise description; no controlled human data on the flower in the sources consulted.
Traditional useAsia: seeds eaten, leaves and perianth used in teas; flower sacred to Hindus, whole plant sacred to Buddhists.
State of researchMany laboratory and rodent studies on nuciferine and flavonoids; little human data. No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU.

From Nymphaea nelumbo to Nelumbo nucifera

Linnaeus included the plant in Species Plantarum in 1753 as Nymphaea nelumbo, among the water lilies, with the habitat note "in Indiis", in the Indies. Gaertner published the name Nelumbo nucifera in 1788 in De Fructibus et Seminibus Plantarum, and Willdenow added Nelumbium speciosum in 1799. WCVP accepts Gaertner’s name and places the plant in the family Nelumbonaceae, apart from the water-lily family Nymphaeaceae; GBIF classifies Nelumbonaceae in the order Proteales.

Native range

According to WCVP, Nelumbo nucifera is native over a very wide area: from southern European Russia, Ukraine, the Caucasus and Iran through Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and the Himalaya to Myanmar, Thailand, Indochina, China, Korea, Japan and the Russian Far East, and south through the Philippines, Java and New Guinea to Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland. It is recorded as introduced in Italy, Romania, Benin, Gabon, the Caribbean and the south-eastern United States. Checklists describe it as an aquatic herb.

Other lotus flowers in the shop

Two further products contain the same species: finely cut Nelumbo nucifera flowers from Thailand and a whole Nelumbo nucifera flower from India. The blue lotus from Herborist is a different plant, Nymphaea caerulea, a water lily of the family Nymphaeaceae.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
