Traditional use
Valeriana officinalis, common valerian, is a European plant whose root has been known since antiquity. According to the historians of medicine Alain Touwaide and Emanuela Appetiti, Theophrastus already mentions a small, pleasant-smelling root from Thrace, and Dioscorides describes in the 1st century a plant they link to valerian; Rembert Dodoens distinguished it as a species in its own right in 1554.
The smell of the root is said to attract cats and dogs. In 2016 the EMA published a European monograph that places it among traditional herbal medicinal products, a category specific to medicines law.
| Known compounds | Valerenic acids (valerenic acid and derivatives), valepotriates (valtrate, isovaltrate), sesquiterpenes of the volatile oil. |

Good to know
- LiverTox (NIH) links valerian to rare instances of clinically apparent liver injury.
The plant: a valerian of the honeysuckle family
Carl Linnaeus published the name Valeriana officinalis in Species Plantarum in 1753. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants, compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts it as a species of the Caprifoliaceae, the honeysuckle family. Plant name lists record several English common names for it, among them common valerian, garden valerian and garden heliotrope.
Where the species grows
The recorded native range covers much of Europe, from Portugal and Spain to Scandinavia and European Russia, and reaches the Caucasus, Türkiye and Iran. The species is also recorded as introduced in Canada and in a number of northern states of the USA. The Indian Elements pack itself names no country.
Other botanical capsules
If you are comparing capsule products, the shop also lists Peruvian maca root capsules (Lepidium meyenii) and Phytolumiar ginkgo seed capsules. Each of those pages names its own plant and plant part.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
