Reported effects and traditional use

According to the supplier, this blend combines extracts of four plants. Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a crucifer cultivated for about 2,000 years on the Andean highlands of Peru, between 4,000 and 4,500 m altitude (Gonzales 2012). Muira puama (Ptychopetalum olacoides) is a small tree of northern Brazil and the Guianas. The name catuaba covers several Brazilian species, which leads to confusion; Trichilia catigua is one of them (Teixeira et al. 2024). Tribulus terrestris features in Chinese, Ayurvedic and Bulgarian traditional medicine (Ștefănescu et al. 2020). The proportions of the four extracts are not stated.

Known compoundsMaca: glucosinolates, macamides, sterols. Tribulus: steroidal saponins, flavonoids. Catuaba (T. catigua): cinchonains, flavanolignans of the bark (Beltrame et al. 2006).
Traditional useMaca: food of the Peruvian highlands. Muira puama: few ethnographic data in the sources consulted. Catuaba: bark in Brazilian folk medicine. Tribulus: Chinese, Ayurvedic and Bulgarian medicine.
State of researchClinical data are limited, inconclusive or inconsistent according to the reviews consulted; composition varies widely between samples. No health claim is authorised in the EU for these plants.

The four named plants

Only one ingredient is given with a Latin name: Tribulus terrestris L., an accepted species of the Zygophyllaceae, the caltrop family, known in English as puncturevine or small caltrop. Maca is the recorded common name of Lepidium meyenii, a member of the mustard family (Brassicaceae) native to Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile and north-western Argentina. Muira puama is recorded as a Portuguese name of Ptychopetalum olacoides (Olacaceae). The supplier does not give a Latin name for catuaba, so this page does not assign one. No proportions are stated for the four extracts.

The same plants on their own

If you are looking for one of the components as a single plant, the shop lists Peruvian maca root in capsules, shredded muira puama root from Brazil and powdered catuaba bark.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
