Important: a plant that contains MAOIs

Dangerous interactions

This plant contains harmala alkaloids (harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine), which are monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). MAOIs block the breakdown of many substances in the body.

  • Never with antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics, other MAOIs), lithium, tramadol or stimulants: risk of serotonin syndrome, which can be fatal.
  • Never with other psychoactive substances (MDMA, amphetamines, cocaine, other psychedelics): the effects can become unpredictable and dangerous.
  • Foods rich in tyramine (aged cheeses, cured meats, fermented products): risk of a sharp rise in blood pressure.
  • Not suitable for people with heart disease or high blood pressure, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • We do not give any preparation method or dosage for this plant.

Traditional use and composition

Banisteriopsis caapi is a vine of the Malpighiaceae family found in the Amazon basin. It is best known as one of the ingredients of ayahuasca, a drink that Indigenous peoples and local communities in Amazonia have long used in ritual and traditional settings.

In Brazil, this use has spread to religious organisations such as the União do Vegetal and Santo Daime. A 2026 review lists 119 ethnotaxa of B. caapi, that is, 119 folk names for types of the vine.

Known compoundsβ-carboline alkaloids: harmine, harmaline and tetrahydroharmine, which inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAOIs). Their levels vary widely from one sample to another (Santos et al. 2020).
Traditional useAn ingredient of ayahuasca in Amazonia, notably among the Shuar of Ecuador; the Siona distinguish at least 18 types of the vine (Santos et al. 2020). Taken up by Brazilian religions such as the União do Vegetal and Santo Daime.
State of researchResearch is mostly chemical: the wide variability in levels makes the material hard to standardise (Santos et al. 2020). No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU.

What the label says, and what it leaves out

The label gives the species, the cut and the country, and nothing more. It names no region of Peru, no harvest date and no people or community, and the net-weight field on the photographed pouch is empty. This page therefore describes the vine only by what is printed and photographed. The cover photo shows the pouch next to a clay bowl of the shreds, the second photo shows the bowl on its own, and the third is a close-up of the cut: pale to mid-brown woody slivers and fibres, with a few darker pieces of bark.

Cielo and the other caapi selections

Cielo is a trade name, not a botanical variety. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants, maintained at Kew, accepts Banisteriopsis caapi in the Malpighiaceae and lists no varieties under it. Plants of the World Online describes the species as a climber of the wet tropics, and Peru lies within its recorded native range. Several products in the shop carry the Cielo name: Napo Cielo is a finer cut that also comes in 1 kg, Cielo Caapi is another shredded vine from Peru in 100 g, 250 g and 1 kg, and the Cielo caapi leaves are whole dried leaves of the same species.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the vine Banisteriopsis caapi?

It is an Amazonian vine of the Malpighiaceae family, known as one of the ingredients of ayahuasca, a ritual drink of peoples of Amazonia. It contains β-carboline alkaloids (harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine).

Why is caapi flagged as containing MAOIs?

Because its β-carbolines inhibit the enzyme monoamine oxidase, as the pharmacological literature describes. This property explains possible interactions with many medicines, hence the warning shown on the page.

Which sizes can you order?

100 g and 250 g. Both contain the same shredded vine.

Does the label name a region or a people?

No. It gives the name Cielo Vine, the species, the cut and Made in Peru. Mycotrop adds no provenance details beyond the label.

Is Cielo a variety of Banisteriopsis caapi?

No. It is the name printed on the label. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants recognises no varieties of the species.

How does it compare with Napo Cielo?

Both are shredded Banisteriopsis caapi from Peru under a Maya Ethnobotanicals label. Napo Cielo is listed as finely shredded and also comes in 1 kg; Cielo Vine comes in 100 g and 250 g.
