What is microdosing?
Microdosing means taking a very small amount of a psychedelic, usually 5–10% of a normal dose, without any “trip” effects: no visuals, no strange thoughts. According to the Trimbos Institute, people who microdose often take 2–3 doses a week for a few weeks, then take a break of several weeks.
A Mycotek microdosing pack holds 6 pre-weighed 1 g portions of fresh truffles. A 1 g portion is a starting point at the top of the range, and it can be split.
How much to take?
Unity (Jellinek / Arkin) defines a microdose as no more than a tenth of a normal dose; for truffles, that works out at about 0.5–0.9 g. The guidelines below come from the Dutch Microdosing Institute.
Mexicana is the mildest: half a portion to a full portion suits most people, but still start with half a portion.

The most common schedules
Fadiman protocol
One microdose day followed by two days off, for 4–8 weeks, then a break of 2–4 weeks.
Every other day
A microdose every second day, or on two fixed days a week, always with at least one day off between doses.
Tolerance break
Tolerance builds quickly: the Trimbos Institute advises taking a break of a few weeks rather than increasing the dose.
What the studies say
People who microdose often report better mood and focus, but placebo-controlled studies find little or no difference. In the largest of them (Szigeti et al., 2021, 191 participants), both groups improved to the same extent. Dutch trials with truffles (Marschall et al., 2022; Prochazkova et al., 2026) found no clear effect on mood, anxiety or creativity, apart from a slight effect on the originality of ideas.
A 2026 review of 11 studies rates the quality of the evidence as low. The Trimbos Institute concludes that it has not been shown that microdosing works, and that much of the effect may be a placebo effect.
Reducing the risks
- Possible side effects: headache, nausea, heart complaints, increased anxiety and slower reactions (take care when driving).
- Start with the smallest amount, on a day without obligations: a portion that is too strong can trigger a real “trip”.
- Not with medication, alcohol or other drugs. Never with lithium or an MAOI. Never stop a prescribed treatment in order to microdose.
- Not advised if you have bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or a risk of psychosis, an anxiety disorder or a cardiovascular problem, nor as self-medication for depression or ADHD.
- In the long term, repeated use raises an unresolved question about the heart valves (5-HT2B receptor): take regular breaks.
Storage
The portions are fresh truffles: keep the pack in the fridge at 2–4 °C, in its original packaging, and stick to the date printed on it. Do not freeze the truffles, and throw away any portion that shows mould.
